linkedinLinkedIn Audiences

Freshpaint Audiences lets you sync Imported audiences and Segments to LinkedIn for ad targeting — while helping you stay compliant with privacy regulations like HIPAA.

This guide walks through how to:

  • Connect your LinkedIn Ads account to Freshpaint

  • Verify your configuration with a connection test

  • Sync audiences to LinkedIn as DMP segments (Audiences)

1. LinkedIn account requirements

The following must be true about the LinkedIn account you use for this integration:

  • Your LinkedIn Ads account is in good standing with LinkedIn and not in violation of their advertising policies

  • You have admin access to the LinkedIn Ad Account you plan to use

  • You can access Audiences / Matched Audiences in LinkedIn Campaign Manager

2. Connect LinkedIn Audiences to Freshpaint

2.1 Find your LinkedIn Ad Account ID

You’ll need your LinkedIn Ad Account ID (a number like 516076087).

You can find it in:

  • The LinkedIn Campaign Manager UI (look for the account ID shown in the account details)

In this URL, 123456789 is the LinkedIn Account ID

✅ Success: You’ve identified the Ad Account ID you want to connect.

2.2 Configure the integration in Freshpaint

  1. In Freshpaint, go to Destinations → Integration Catalog

  2. Select LinkedIn Audiences (Audiences category)

  3. In Base configuration, click Configure

  4. Enter your Ad Account ID

  5. Click Save

✅ Success: The Base configuration row shows Configured.

2.3 Authenticate with LinkedIn (OAuth)

  1. In the same destination config page, find the Access Permission row

  2. Click Login with LinkedIn (or Reconnect if you need to re-authenticate)

  3. Complete the LinkedIn OAuth flow in the new window/tab

✅ Success: The Access Permission row shows Connected. (If you’ve connected before, you may see Reconnect.)

If you plan to sync Segments (behavioral audiences), enable Automatic identity matching so Freshpaint can resolve eligible web traffic to email addresses.

  1. Open Automatic identity matching

  2. Click Enable (or leave disabled if you only plan to use Imported audiences)

💡 Important: Identity matching is required to send Segments to destinations that require email.

2.5 Configure Allowlisted Audience identifiers

LinkedIn Audiences uses email to match and sync audiences.

  1. In the destination settings, open Allowlisted Audience identifiers.

  2. Confirm Email is listed and check the consent box.

  3. Click Save.

This must be accepted to use the integration.

2.6 Test your connection

Freshpaint validates your LinkedIn configuration by creating an empty test audience in your LinkedIn account.

  1. Scroll to Configuration status

  2. Click Test connection (or Retest connection)

✅ Success: You’ll see Configuration is valid and Freshpaint will show the name of a test audience it created (you can safely delete it in LinkedIn).

2.7 Enable and save your integration

  1. Click Enable (this may have already switched to enabled after consenting to email usage)

  2. Click Save

  3. (Optional) Click Add label to help identify this integration later

✅ Success: Your LinkedIn Audiences destination is ready to use.

3. How syncing works (what LinkedIn receives)

When you sync an audience to LinkedIn:

  • Freshpaint sends hashed email addresses to LinkedIn

  • Freshpaint creates and updates a LinkedIn DMP segment (Audience)

  • Freshpaint uses the audience’s alias as the segment name (not the audience’s internal name)

Best Practices & Reminders

  1. Plan for processing time

    1. LinkedIn often needs time to process uploaded audience data. It may take 24+ hours before the audience size is meaningful, and it may continue updating afterward.

  2. Minimum audience size

    1. LinkedIn requires a minimum audience size (commonly 300+ members) before it can be used reliably in campaigns.

      1. If your audience is smaller, expand your criteria or use an Imported audience list with more users.

  3. Re-authenticate if your connection becomes invalid

  4. If OAuth expires or permissions change, you may see configuration errors.

    1. Click Login with LinkedIn (or Reconnect) and then Retest connection.

  5. Inactive audiences can expire

    1. If a LinkedIn audience is not used for an extended period, LinkedIn may mark it inactive and eventually purge it. If that happens, reconnect the audience in Freshpaint to recreate it.

What's Next?

Now that you’ve connected LinkedIn Audiences, you’re ready to start syncing audiences.

Here’s what you can do next:

  • Create a Segment → Build behavioral audiences from your event data

  • Import an Audience → Upload a CSV of users (emails only) to target

  • Send an Audience → Sync your audiences to LinkedIn for campaign targeting
